Highlands County GenWeb
The Bougainvillea Cemetery is located on the west edge of the city of Avon Park, Florida on the westside of U.S. Highway 27 and lays between West La Grande St. and West Winthrop St. There are two entrances from U.S.27 at the front and several to the north side from West Winthrop.
According to a local history it was laid out by Avon Park city founder, Oliver Crosby and the first recorded burial was that of 3 month old Hilda Stenstrom in 1888. This grave was located during our survey. The cemetery is currently being used, with room for expansion in the rear and on the south side.
Our survey was conducted over a period of several years by a relatively small group and while we did an up-date walk-thru after finishing and have coordinated our records with the Cemetery Association, additional burials prevent it ever being complete.
The survey was done in such a manner that by using maps and starting from the left front corner, working to the right and back, it was possible to assign each gravesite, occupied or not, a row and number. This makes it possible to locate with relative ease where in the cemetery any name listed can be found.
This survey was compiled in the 80's and only now being published on the WEB, having been previously published in the Genealogical Newsletter quite some time ago.
We will be re-indexing this cemetery in the near future and will then have photos of the stones.
This Search Engine will search all of the Highlands County Data Base!!!
