Welcome To Highlands County

Hello, we are the Highlands County Genealogical Society, your new host, and Welcome to Highlands County. I hope you enjoy your visit here today. Highlands County was formed in 1921 from part of Desoto County and we then became a part of the Tri-County area. The Tri-County area includes Highlands, Glades and Hardee County which were all prior to 1921 part of Desoto County.

Our CC is Mike Flood and our ACC is Peggy McSwain

If you are unable to find what you are searching for on my pages here. Please follow this link to Desoto County and try there. So if you need information that dates before 1921 click here now:

Also take a few minutes now to join a new list in Florida which covers our entire area, "Old DeSoto County", it is called FLDESOTO-List. It covers the part of Florida that was once all part of DeSoto County until 1921. We have joined forces to try and offer to you the most information for the area as possible to aid in your research efforts.

To join in LIST form send an e-mail message now to: leave the subject blank and put only the word SUBSCRIBE in the body of the message, or

To join in DIGEST mode send the same message to: and you will receive the messages in Digest form.

Our New List covers the Counties of: DeSoto, Hardee, Glades, Charolette, and Highlands Counties. What makes this list so great is that the County Corrdinators of all five Counties help answer your questions about the five Counties. Hope to see you there real soon!

Highlands County Florida is located in the Center of the State. We are for the most part a friendly bunch of Southern people.  Highlands County is made up of the following Cities, Towns, and suburbs; Avon Park, Lake Placid,Sebring, Lorida, Venus, and Spring Lake. We are well known for our Citrus industry, Caladium bulbs, 12 hours of Sebring which draws thousands each year in March.

If you happen to be a Highlands County Resident and just dropped in to see what's new I could sure use your help! Why not take a couple of minutes before going on and check out the new Volunteers Needed page. For anyone else outside the Highlands County area if you feel that you have information that should be added please feel free to e-mail us directly at your post will recieve a quick reply as donations are always welcomed here.

There are still several Florida Counties that need sponsors. There is really nothing to it. You are not responsible for doing lookups, (unless you want to), and you don't even have to live in the county you sponsor. Take a look at the Florida County list and if you would like to host a county, check out the Adopt a County link on the Florida Home page then e-mail the state coordinator, Fran Smith
