Louisiana purchase. U.S. buys the Louisiana territory from France for 4 cents per acre. Purchase included part of western Florida. Map

General Andrew Jackson attacks Pensacola and drives out British troops and settlers.

U.S. troops enter Florida to attack Seminole Indians. General Andrew Jackson crossed the border, burned Seminole villages and captured the Spanish towns of St. Marks and Pensacola. This started the First Seminole Indian War (1817 - 1818).

Mosquito County created out of St. Johns County. The name comes from the Spanish name for the entire coast “Los Mosquitos”. (Very appropriate, then and now.) County seat is at Enterprise. Map
