Evergreen (Zellwood-Tangerine) Cemetery
From Orlando area; Take Orange Blossom Trail (US-441) heading north. When you get to Apopka,
US 441 becomes E. Main Street as it bears to the left. Continue on E. Main Street past the FL-429 TOLL Road.
and past the Orange Country Airport. Take a Right at Sadler Road which has a light. On your left will be the
Lake Ola Baptist Church.
Once you pass the church you will notice heavy brush area where the road is going to bend to the
right and there is a turn off towards the left with a DEAD END ROAD sign. Take the dead end road which
is Cemetery Road. CAUTION is required at this turn as it is very difficult to see oncoming cars from around the
bend. Now that you have made the turn, continue around to the left and the road will straighten from
this point. You will also pass the entrance to Tangerine Cemetery on your right. There will
be another curve to the right and then you will see the brick entrance to
Evergreen Cemetery on your left. If using Map Quest for driving directions the address is like
this [5592-5599] Cemetery Rd, Mount Dora, FL 32757
This is a very old cemetery with many Civil War veterans from both sides buried here. I have seen
references that indicate that this was the white cemetery and the Tangerine Cemetery was for Afro-Americans.
That would be typical for southern cemeteries older than 1970.
This is a moderately well cared for cemetery which looks to be still active. However, the sandy soil and lack
of any irrigation system gives the cemetery a slightly unkempt look. There is also no fence seperating the
cemetery from the road which means that some road trash litters the area.
