Welcome to the Leon County GenWeb site.

Other than the Florida State Archives and Library, this is the best genealogical resource in this county. This site has cemetery indexes, marriage records, wills, biographies, obituaries, and newspaper clippings from historical newspapers in the county.

About Leon County

Leon County was formed out of Gadsden county and created as a county by the Florida Territorial Legislature on December 29, 1824. It was named for Juan Ponce de Leon, a Spanish explorer. Leon County is located in north Florida and is bordered by the state of Georgia and by Wakulla, Liberty, Gadsden, and Jefferson counties.

Tallahassee is the only incorporated city in Leon County and is the county seat. Other named communities that are not incorporated include Bradfordville, Capitola, Ft. Braden, Woodville, Chaires, Miccosukee, and the large planned residential communities of Killearn and Southwood.

We are proud to be a part of the FLGenWeb Project, Inc. We are a not-for-profit corporation and want to assure all visitors that we are a non-commercial, all-volunteer organization and NOT connected in any way with USGenWeb.

There are still several Florida Counties that need sponsors. If you enjoy genealogy, know how to create and manage a web site, and want to assist the genealogical community, you would enjoy being a county coordinator. You are not responsible for obtaining the data yourself or doing lookups for people, (unless you want to). You don't even have to live in the county you sponsor. Visit the Florida GenWeb Project, Inc. page for more information (www.fl-genweb.org).
