About Leon County
Leon County was formed out of Gadsden county and created as a county by the Florida
Territorial Legislature on December 29, 1824. It was named for Juan Ponce de Leon,
a Spanish explorer. Leon County is located in north Florida and is bordered by the
state of Georgia and by Wakulla, Liberty, Gadsden, and Jefferson counties.
Tallahassee is the only incorporated city in Leon County and is the county seat. Other
named communities that are not incorporated include Bradfordville, Capitola, Ft. Braden,
Woodville, Chaires, Miccosukee, and the large planned residential communities of
Killearn and Southwood. |
