Above is a fair likeness of the
late Harry Cross, whose death occured Jan 9, 1948, following a long illness.
He was 72 years old and had been a resident of Arcadia for more than half
a century, operating a drug store on Oak Street for forty years of that
time. The picture from which the ????? engraving was made was taken some
years ago but was the only one avaliable. It was ordered to be used with
the notice of death but was unavoidably delayed in coming from the engraver.

T. Recie Russ
The Arcadian - 12 Feb 1948
Full Military rites were held
last Sunday for Tomlinson Recie Russ, 24, of Myakka City, an Army sergeant
who was killed in action at St. Lo, France, on July 30, 1944.
The body had been shipped back
from the European Theater of Operations under government supervision and
was sent here accompanied by Sergeant Shelly Shilling of Atlanta, Ga.
The services were held in the
Church of God with Rev. J. J. Self officiating. Burial was in Joshua Creek
Cemetery with the American Legion in charge. Robarts Funeral Home had charge
of the arrangements.
Sgt. Russ was born in Brownville,
June 8, 1924, and had resided in Myakka City for the last several years.
Surviving are: his mother, Mrs. Florence Williams; three sisters, Mrs.
M. L. Putnal, of Myakka City, Mrs. George Jardine, of Glouscester, Mass.,
Mrs. Betty Galloway of Bonita Springs; one half brother, B. F. Snow, of
Sarasota; two half sisters, Norma and Ovida Williams.
Memebers of the American Legion
acted as pallbearers. The honorary pallbearers included Aiden Albritton,
Buck Albritton, Phillip McLeod, Chesley McLeod, Eddie Durrance, Earl Ness.

Frank H. Langford
The Arcadian - 26 Feb 1948
News was recieved here by the
family of Frank H. Langford, 43, of his sudden death Sunday at his home
in Coatsville, Pa. He was a native of Desoto County and had lived in Coatsville
the past 15 years. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Thelma Langford, of
Coatsville; his mother, Mrs. Harriet Langford, of Brownville, near here;
five brothers, E. C. and M. W. Langford, of Frostproof; O. D. Langford,
of Arcadia; G. B. Langford, of Jacksonville, and B. G. Langford, of Zolfo
Springs; and five sisters, Mrs. Rosalie Dozier, of Brownville; Mrs. Edna
Blount, of Arcadia; Mrs. Loca Ray Fuller, of Roswell, N. M.; Mrs. eula
Sanchez, of Palmetto, and Mrs. Hazel Cornell, of Fort Myers.

William R. Farr, Jr.
The Arcadian - 03 Mar 1948
The body of William Riley Farr,
aviation machinist's mate first class, who was killed in naval action near
Guadalcanal Jan. 29, 1944, was expected to arrive today for a military
funeral tomorrow, Friday.
The body was returned from the
Pacific Theater of Operations to the Distribution Center at Atlanta, Ga.
and was to have been shipped on here under Navy escort for final burial.
Robarts Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.
Although arrangements were not
complete, the service was expected to be held at the Trinity Methodist
Church with veterans organizations conducting the last rites.
The deceased, who was 19 at
the time of death, was graduated from Desoto High School as an honor student
in the class of 1942. He was interested in school sports and played on
the football and basketball teams and engaged in other sports events.
His father, William R. Farr,
Sr., and step-mother, Mrs. Sarah Farr, reside on the Carlstrom Field Rd.
Also surviving are: one brother, Ted of Arcadia; two sisters, Mary and
Mable of Arcadia; one step-sister, Mrs. Eugene Brannan of Arcadia; grandfather,
Charles Floyd of Summerville, Ga.
Mrs. Leo Albers, mother of the
deceased sailor, is expected to be here for the services.
Mr. & Mrs. Farr said they
would donate the flag, which will cover the sailor's coffin, to the High
School.

Robert L. Sapp
The Arcadian - 18 Mar 1948
Robert Lee Sapp, of Ft. Ogden,
a resident of Desoto County for 80 years died last Saturday at his home.
He was born Sept. 7, 1860 in Bradford County and was 87 years old at the
time of his death. He has been a farmer by occupation, but was retired.
Surviving are: his wife; two
sons, William F. Sapp and Carl Sapp, all of Ft. Ogden.
Funeral services were conducted
last Sunday at the Nocatee Baptist Church with Rev. C. P. Rogers, officiating.
Burial was in the Ft. Ogden Cemetery. Robarts Funeral Home was in charge
of arrangements.
Pallbearers were Barney McLain,
George Proctor, Joe Shores, Fount Kelley, Harney Carlton, Charles Coulter.

Morris L. Jones
The Arcadian - 27 May 1948
The body of Morris L. Jones of
Arcadia, negro steward in the Navy, was returned to Arcadia this week through
the American Graves Registration Service, for services and burial here.
Jones, the son of Mr. &
Mrs. Isaac Jones, died in Algiers, Africa, as the result of a jeep accident
which occured October 31, 1945. He entered the naval service in 1943 attaining
the rating of steward, second class. He was 21. Full military rites will
be observed at the services to be held at the Elizabeth Baptist Church
at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 29. Rev. Willie Gardner will officiate, and members
of Battery D of the local National Guard unit will conduct the military
rites. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery.
Surviving are his parents.

We wish to thank our friends,
neighbors, and all who helped in any way during the funeral servicefor
our beloved son, Morris L. Jones. We wish to thank those who sent flowers,
Rev. Willie Gardner for his kind words, and the local National Guard unit
for its help in the military rites.

Carl Lavan Sullivan
The Arcadian - 17 June 1948
Carl Lavan Sullivan, a Desoto
County resident all his life, died this week at the Arcadia General Hospital
following a lingering illness. He was 51.
Mr. Sullivan, a veteran of WWI,
resided on East Gibson Street and was a farmer by occupation.
Surviving are: his wife, Mrs.
C. L. Sullivan; three sons, Donald Wayne and Gilbert; his mother, Mrs.
Mary Sullivan; six brothers, Braid H., John, Walter, George, and Connally
Sullivan, all of Arcadia; J. R. Sullivan of Fort Pierce; four sisters,
Mrs. Pearl Bass and Mrs. Emma Jones of Arcadia; Mrs. J. W. McDuffie of
Bartow; Mrs. Myrtle Wadsworth of Lakeland.
Funeral services were conducted
Tuesday at 3 p.m. at the Church of God. Rev. J. J. Self and Rev. C. L.
White had charge of the services. Robarts Funeral Home was in charge of
arrangements. Burial was in Joshua Creek Cemetery.
Pallbearers were members of
the American Legion. They were George Stonebraker, Robert Ebersole, William
Ambler, W. B. Tinsley, Mike Pooser, A. C. Polk, Jr., Charles Myers, and
Jerrold Gaskins acted as colored bearers.

Mrs. Elizabeth Anderson
The Arcadian - 22 July 1948
Mrs. Elizabeth Anderson, mother
of Sheriff Tom Anderson, died Tuesday night following a lingering illness.
She was 88.
Mrs. Anderson, who was born
in Ga. and resided in Desoto County for half a century, died at the home
of a daughter, Mrs. Maggie Mobley, S. Mills Ave. with whom she made her
home. The deceased was well known here and had been an active and respected
church worker before her illness.
Surviving are the following
children: Sheriff Tom Anderson and Mrs. Maggie Mobley of Arcadia; William
Franklin Douglas of Alva; John D. Douglas of Ft. Myers and Mrs. Pearl
Stanley of Tampa. Also surviving are 30 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren,
and 4 great great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held
at
the First Baptist Church at 3 p.m. tomorrow, Fri July 23. Rev. W. E. Denington
will officiate at the services. Burial will be in Owens Cemetery with Robarts
Funeral Home in charge.

Laurie C. Evans
The Arcadian - 24 July 1948
Full military honors will be
accorded Staff Sergeant Laurie C. Evans during funeral services for the
World War II soldier scheduled at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 25 at the Robarts
Funeral Home Chapel.
Rev. Wm. J. Barfield of Miami
will preach the sermon, with Battery D and the American Legion in charge
of the service at Oak Ridge Cemetery.
The soldier's body was due to
arrive today, Thursday, from the Atlanta Distribution Depot at Atlanta,
Ga. It was brought from the Brookwood Cemetery in London, England, aboard
the U.S. Army transport, "Lawrence Victory."
Sgt. Evans died Nov. 10, 1943
in a plane crash in England. He was 29 years old at the time of his death,
and was the son of Mrs. Mary Evans, 603 North Polk Ave.
The deceased soldier entered
the service in January, 1942, and after recieving training at Langley Field,
Va., was sent overseas to England in August of the same year for further
training. He was a mechanic and a gunner aboard a bomber during his length
of service.
Sgt. Evans was born in Andrew,
S. C., March 5, 1914, the son of the late C. E. Evans and Mrs. Mary Evans.
He came to Arcadia with his parents in 1925 and attended school here.
Shortly before war broke out
he worked in a shipyard at Norfolk, Va., and then entered the Army Air
Forces.
Surviving are: his mother, Mrs.
Mary Evans; three brothers, Jack of Richmond, Va., Leland of Englewood,
Fla., C. E. Evans Jr. of Gasparilla, Fla.; one adopted brother, Forrest
Roark of Wildwood, Fla.; four sisters, Mrs. Mil. Tanner of Joseph City,
Arz., Mrs. N. T. Chalkley of Richmond, Va., Mrs. M. F. Casselman of Andrew,
S.C., and Mrs. T. F. Wilder of Hamlet, N.C.

John D. Wynn
The Arcadian - 22 July 1948
John D. Wynn of Route 1, Arcadia
died last Sat., July 17 in the Arcadia General Hospital, following a lingering
illness. He was 74 years of age.
Mr. Wynn, who was born in Hamilton
County, Fla. had been a resident of Desoto County for about 39 years. Prior
to his illness he had been a citrus worker.
Surviving are: three sons, Crockett
Wynn of Arcadia; Vernon Wynn of Visalia, Ca.; Robert L. Wynn of Merced,
Ca.; three daughters, Mrs. Paul Montgomery of Bokeelia, Fla.; Mrs. Ossie
Montgomery of Arcadia; Mrs. Irene Dolan of Teaneck, N.J.; one brother,
Jessie Wynn of Jasper, Fla.
Funeral services were held last
Monday at the Robarts Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Morris Hawley of Nocatee
officiated. Burial was at Kabrich Cemetery in Nocatee. Pallbearers were:
Buck Wever, Barney McLain, Charles Kabrich, Stanley Nicholson, Leo Dees,
John Parker.

James C. Rogers
The Arcadian - 05 Aug 1948
The body of Seaman 1st Class,
James Carl Rogers is expected to arrive in Arcadia tomorrow, Fri. for services
and burial at the First Baptist Church at 3 p.m. Sun. Aug 8. A full military
service will be conducted with members of the Veterans of Foriegn Wars
and the local unit of the National Guard particpating.
Rev. L. T. Fagan and Rev. J.
H. Self will officiate at the services. Burial will be at the Joshua Creek
Cemetery with the Robarts Funeral Home in charge.
The sailor who was killed in
naval action off the coast of Sicily, Italy July 10, 1942 was only 19 at
the time of his death. He was born in Arcadia Jan. 2, 1923 and attended
schools here before entering the service.
Surviving are: his parents Mr.
& Mrs. James V. Rogers, N. Orange Ave; three brothers Paul Francis
Rogers, who is serving in Japan; Parker Rogers and James Ralph Rogers of
Arcadia; two sisters, Mrs. Grady Sullivan of Ft. Pierce; Christine Rogers
of Arcadia; grandparents Mr. & Mrs. Frank M. Brown of Arcadia; Mr.
& Mrs. Will Rogers of Washington D.C.

Edith Miriam Bell
The Arcadian - Sept 1948
Miss Edith Miriam Bell, a native
of Arcadia and Desoto County, died at her home in Miami, Aug. 31, following
a long illness.
Funeral services will be held
at the First Baptist Church in Arcadia at 3 p.m. tomorrow, Fri., with Rev.
L. T. Fagan in charge. Burial will be at Oak Ridge Cemetery.
Miss Bell, daughter of former
Desoto County Judge and Mrs. W. D. Bell, was born in Arcadia Feb. 6, 1923.
She attended school here and was graduated from Desoto High School. She
has been a resident of Miami for the last five years.
The deceased is survived by
her parents; three brothers Douglas, Malley, Ruddy, all of Miami; two sisters,
Elldyn and Iris, also of Miami.
Miss Bell was a popular member
of her High School class and her many friends and acquaintances were shocked
to learn of her death. She had been seriously ill for about six months.
Robarts Funeral Home is in charge
of arrangements.

William H. Whidden
The Arcadian - 09 Dec 1948
William Hardy Whidden, well known
Bunker retired farmer died Tuesday, December 7, at his home in Bunker following
a long illness. He was 74.
Mr. Whidden was a native of
Desoto County and was born here October 16, 1874. He had resided here his
entire life.
Surviving are: his wife, Mrs.
Louella Sheffield Whidden; the following children: Mrs. Harold Curry of
Venice, Wallace Whidden of Arcadia, Harvey B. Whidden of Boca Grande, Mrs.
Bryant Coker of Arcadia; Louis Whidden US Army in S. Dakota, Gleen R. Whidden
US Navy in Guam, Gilbert L. Whidden US Marines Washington D.C., Mrs. Homer
Christ of Arcadia; two brothers, James Irvin Whidden of Wauchula, Joshua
O. Whidden, Zolfo Springs.
Funeral services arranged by
the Robarts Funeral Home, were held at 4 p.m. Wed. at the Oak Hill Cemetery.
Interment was made in the cemetery there. Rev. W. E. Denington and Rev.
Walter Bates had charge of the services.
Active pallbearers were John
Coker,
John Boatwright, Frank Bates, George Stonebraker, J. D. Albritton, W. M.
Short. Honorary pallbearers were Maston Bates, Sears Coker, Aaron Bates,
Andy Wensell, John Easter, and Fred Munson.
