Naples Daily News - Dec.6, 1971 - Monday afternoon Pg.1-A
" Prepare Honor Guard For Slain Policeman."

Naples Police Department members were scheduled to provide honor guards this afternoon and tonight for patrolman Louie C. Collins, who was killed Friday while attending police school at Fort Myers.

Chief John Woodruff said members of the department will also serve as pallbearers for Collins funeral at 2pm Tuesday at
Pittman's Naples Chapel.

A member of the Department since November 1970,

Collins will be buried in full dress uniform,
Woodruff said, and his badge and identification number ( 89) will be retired.

Visitation today is from 2 until 4 pm and from 7
until 9 pm at the funeral home.

Collins was killed when a .38-cal. revolver fell from a desk, landed on it's hammer and fired a slug into his abdomen as members of a police academy class were returning following a break.

An autopsy revealed the slug ranged upward, hitting the rib cage before penetrating a lung and Collins heart. Witnesses said he died within two to three minutes after the shooting.

States Attorney Joseph D'Allesandro said this morning at Fort Myers that he had not recieved an official copy of the autopsy report, but the shooting would " undoubtedly be classified as an accidental death."

A memorial fund for Collins was started Sunday night at a party which Collins was to have attended at the home of
Mr. and Mrs. Bill Kane. Mrs.Aleta Fickey,
chairman of the fund, said $100 was raised and that donations to the memorial can be made at
  First National Bank.
Mrs. Fickey said the fund was started by friends of the officer and proceeds will be used to erect a memorial, with any money left over going to a police charity.
