Cale Howard Jones, Naples
first police chief, died quietly in his sleep yesterday at his home at
144 10th Ave, South. Jones was 63 years of age, a native of Jasper, Georgia. He moved to Naples in 1923. In his death, Naples loses one of it's most colorful figures. When Naples was incorporated in 1924, he was appointed it's first City Marshal. The jail was then in the " Paw Paw" Patch, located in the area between Crayton Cove and the Old Naples Hotel. A quite man, Jones kept the peace in Naples with only a two man force. When the office of Police chief was created, he was appointed as it's first chief and served in that capacity until his retirement in 1958, a period of nearly 31 years. Besides his wife, Mrs.Alice Jones, he is survived by two sons, Cale Jones of Naples, and Charles Edward Jones, a sergeant on the Naples Police Department. Two brothers, Stephen Allison and Jesse Floyd, both of Naples; one sister, Mrs Ethel Roland of Grant City, Alabama, and six grandchildren. He was a member of the First Methodist Church of Naples, The Elks, and the National and International Association of Police Chiefs. Friends may call at the Richard A.Pittman Funeral Home from 2 to 5 o'clock Thursday and from 7 to 9 Thursday night. Funeral services will be at 2 o'clock friday afternoon in the chapel of the Pittman Funeral Home. Rites Tomorrow For Cale H. Jones" Naples Police, headed by chief D.L.( Sam) Bass, will pay their last respects to Cale H. Jones, chief of that department for more than 30 years, by acting as an honor guard and honorary pallbearers at funeral services to be held at 2o'clock tomorrow afternoon in the chapel of the Richard A. Pittman Funeral Home. Rev.John E. Rice, pastor of the First Methodist church, will conduct the services. In addition to police, honorary pallbearers will include Eugene Gandees, Cecil Tuell and Clyde McFry. Active pallbearers wil be Mayor Archie Turner, Harry Lundquist, County Tax Collector A.P.Ayers, Lee County Sheriff " Snag" Thompson, Capt. Preston Sawyer, and Richie Yannaco. Burial will be in Naples Memorial Gardens. ![]() ©
