| The
feature of the Pioneer Club's luncheon was a paper by Dr. Sarah
Wheeler, in which she told in a delightful and informal style of
Lakeland as it was when she herself was a newcomer eighteen years ago. Dr. Wheeler's evident determination to give the women of the area the lion's share of the credit for Lakeland's early development, and the contrast of those days and now created much amusement. Other features of the day included the united assembly of the Pioneers and the Exchange Club, which was meeting in the next room A spelling contest of which requirements that only a few could negotiate the jawbreakers given out by Mrs. Paddock was the source of confusion and laughfter. First and second prizes , noise-maker toys, were bestowed on Mrs. Ida B. Lusk and Mrs. Mary V. Hallam. The program was in charge of Miss Zelle Emerson and Mrs. C. R. Rogers was hostess for the day. Dr. Wheeler was introduced by Mrs. D. C. Warner as her paper was one of a series on Florida being presented under Mrs. Warner's direction. The next in the series is one of Northwestern Florida, by Mrs. Anna Nold Paddock, and the next is on Sumpter County and Dade Park by Mrs. W. S. Irvin. The hostess for the next meeting was announced as Mrs. C. Wolfson, the program being in charge of Mrs. Bradford G. Williams. |
