Ed Mimbs Hanged At Bartow Today for Murder of A.D.Buie
The First Whiteman ever legally hung in Polk County paid the penality for murder on the gallows today when Ed Mimbs was hanged for the murder of A.D.Buie, of Lake Wales. The hanging occured shortly after 11:00 this morning and exactly nine minutes after the trap was sprung by Sheriff Logan, the man was pronounced dead.
Before he went to his fate,Mimbs made a full confession, declaring that he killed Buie and that his father,Jasper Mimbs, planned the killing for him. He declaired that Buie had told him that if he ever did have any trouble with him that it would be a graveyard trouble and in talking it over with his father, the latter urged him to kill Buie. He purchased the shells for him and planned the whole affair, according to the son's sworn statement, which he made. The elder Mimbs was to hang also today for the same crime but his sentence was reciently commuted to life imprisonment.
Mimbs went to his death bravely, and was attended by Rev. Yates, who offered prayer for the doomed man.
The hanging was witnessed by about 60 people.
