N. Burt Childs, Bartow Resident of Polk for 55 years, succumbs

deputy under Sheriff DeWitt Sinclair and longtime Polk County law
enforcement officer, died at 7:20 a.m. today at the Bartow General
Hospital after a month's illness. He was 70 years of age. Mr.
Childs underwent an operation in the hospital about a month ago
A native of Georgia, he came to Bartow 55 years ago at the age of 15, He began his law enforcement career in 1895 as Chief Deputy for Sheriff Dallas Tillis. Mr. Childs held this post until 1903, when he went into the contracting business. He moved to Bone Valley, near Hillsborough County line, and sold lumber to phosphate companies. Later he transferred to the Southern part of the county, but soon came back to Bartow, where he was engaged in the sawmill and lumber business for many years. Mr. Childs became interested in sheep in 1918, raising many head on the island in the Kissimmee River. In 1933 he again became a law enforcement officer as a deputy under Sheriff W. W. Chase. When Sheriff DeWitt Sinclair took office, Mr. Childs remained as office deputy. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Alice Childs; 3 sons, W. B. Childs, Howard Childs and Walter Childs; one daughter, Miss Elizabeth Childs; 3 brothers, Frank Childs, Bartow, W. H. Childs, Greensboro, Ga., and J. F. Childs, San Diego; and 3 sisters, Mrs. Viola McAlpino, Bolegee, Ala., Mrs. Ava Roberts, Hot Springs, N.M., and Mrs. Marie Kay, Phoenix, Arizona. Funeral arrangements have not been announced. |
