Pasco County Pension Files extracted from the Florida Confederate Pension Application Files, Record Group 137 Series 587
Confederate
pensions in Florida were first
authorized in 1885 and granted to veterans $5.00 a month. In the
following thirty years a new
Confederate pension bill was introduced to
almost all successive Legislative sessions. Added to the bill was a
residency requirement, allowance
for militia members and widows were
added, financial qualifications were adjusted and rewritten, and the
methods of payments and amounts of payment
adjusted on several
different occasions as the Bills were revised.
Confederate pensions were awarded to residents of Florida regardless of the state in which their service was rendered.
The following Pasco County Florida extract from the State index is arranged in alphabetical order (the State index is done by application file number).
First
is the veteran's name, his unit of
service, state of service (if other than Florida), widow's first and
maiden name, county from which the application
was filed, and the
earliest year of application, file number and number of pages included
in the file packet.
Widow's
application are filed with her
husband and includes her full name, date and place of marriage, date
and place of her husband's death,
her place and length of residence in
Florida, and proof of her husband's service. Some of the early
applications include the widows' date and place of birth.
Copies are available from the Florida State Archives for a flat rate of $7.50 per file. Both the veteran and widow are filed together.
