FLGenWeb logoCreated by an act of the Florida Legislature in 1887 from Monroe County; Lee County was named after Robert E. Lee, general of the Army of the Confederate States of America. Ft. Myers, the county seat, was established in 1850 as a fort for defense of the raiding Indians who occupied the area. It was named for the son-in-law of the founder of Fort Brooke in Tampa, Col Abraham C. Myers, who was stationed there for seven years.

Situated on the southwest coast of Florida. Lee County enjoys a mild sub-tropical climate that many "snowbirds" find attractive. From November to April each year many part-time residents return to Lee County from the "great white north"enjoy a "season in the sun".

Lee County is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, including Captiva and Sanibel and in its eastern reaches the lure of the wild everglades can be felt. Lee County truly enjoys it all, gorgeous climate, a high social season for the metropolitan and natures wild beauty for the nature lovers, with many species of flora and fauna indigenous only to Florida. Fabulous sunsets over the beautiful waters of the Gulf of Mexico are a nightly occurence.
