Henry Taylor “Hal” Frierson. Born August 18, 1882
at Fort
Myers, Florida, he is the son of Taylor and Anna (Dagenhardt) Frierson,
the eldest of their five sons. After Hal attended Military School, he
opened a grocery and supply store with his brother, Ed Frierson, at
LaBelle. It catered to the heavy river traffic and was quite successful
but Hal held at Pilot’s License and soon left this business
to
captain some small ships. In 1911, He was Captain of the launch
"Harold" and was hired by some land agents to conduct prospective
buyers to lands bordering Lake Okeechobee. This operation came to
naught when it was discovered that like many of the Florida land
speculators' offerings, was not as advertised. During the law suits
that followed, Hal was called to testify, but as he was captain of the
boat only, he knew nothing of the land deals and was not involved.
(Sources: Notes of his sister, Ruth Frierson McGinn, and "A Yankee
Pioneer In Florida" by Allen H. Andrews.)
Hal and Ben King had groves on Sanibel Island circa 1921. His sister,
Ruth, wrote: "Hal's house was at the western end of Sanibel Island.
There was a deep pass with very swift current on the north side of his
place and a bridge that connected Sanibel Island to Captiva Island. Hal
bought his place that had several acres and a house in bad shape. He
repaired it and painted it black to dull reflection of the sun. The
groves were destroyed during a hurricane and he went to work for U.S.
Sugar at Clewiston, FL.
Hal Frierson's obituary reads: HAL FRIERSON. Died Monday (3/16/59) in
Ar cadia Hospital. The Funeral will be Thursday (3/19/59) at 2:00 p.m.
Futch Funeral Home, Reverend Martin Davis of Moore Haven Methodist

Corporation. He is survived by a stepdaughter, Marjorie Daughtrey of

Notes
James Edward “Ed” Frierson was born May 26, 1889 in
Fort
Myers, Florida. He attended Southern College, a United Methodist
institution that was then located at Sutherland, now Palm Harbor,
Florida. It is presently located in Lakeland, Florida. He then went
into business with his brother Hal in the grocery and supply stores,
one of which was at the end of a dock in Fort Myers where it catered to
the river traffic. Following his marriage to Ruth Wallace of Fort Myers
on March 11, 1917, they bought land near Lake Okeechobee in what is now
Glades County. At first they raised vegetables and poultry, but
switched to sugar cane a more profitable crop. Ed was Chairman of the
Board of County Commissioners of Glades County for many years. It was
at that time that the canal was dredged to connect the river with Lake
Okeechobee around 1931. Ed and Ruth survived both the 1926 and 1928
Hurricanes. In 1928, they were trapped in their house as the water
swept across their farm and they had to chop a hole in the roof to
escape. They were saved when a small boat came along and rescued them.
They had no children, but welcomed their many nieces, nephews and
cousins to their gracious home in Moore Haven. Ed and Ruth are buried
at Ridgelawn Cemetery in Clewiston, Florida. Ruth Frierson said that Ed
Frierson, her brother, attended college without help from his parents.
He stayed with Sara Wall Clarke, his great-aunt, and did work there to
earn his keep. He was popular with the girls from around Fort Myers,
especially his cousin, Isabelle Hendry and would bring candy and treats
at their dorm, climbing up to the windows outside their rooms.
Ed Frierson told us that while at Florida Southern, he and a minister's
son got into some sort of scrape that caused an infraction of the rules
and were called before the Dean. The minister's son was not punished,
but certain restrictions were placed on Ed. He felt it was most unfair
as they had both been involved, so he left college and went home, never
to return. He made friends of the children of the Lykes family at
college, and they remained close until his death.
Ruth T. Frierson, Ed's sister, wrote in 1991, "Louis Hendry was a
lawyer and had his office on the 2nd floor over the grocery store at
the corner of First St. and Jackson St. (which runs down to a large
dock at the end of the street. There was a grocery store out at the end
of the dock that catered to the boats that tied up there). Edward
&
his older brother, Hal, had the store for a couple of years. He would
fill orders and deliver them and he would tell the folks of the
vegetables and fruit they would get in. The store catered to the Cruise
ships that would tie up for fuel, etc. The store kept quite a variety
of stock as well as fruit and vegetables. Edward would go for stock
each a.m., or they would be brought to the store and Ed would help
unload them to be sure they were fresh and in good condition."
In picture at entrance to Frierson home about 7 miles from Moore Haven,
F L. Edward "Ed" Frierson is wearing high laced boots and riding pants.
The boots are treated so they are practically water-proof. They are
also high enough to protect him from snake bites and that was a must in
the fields there below the dike protecting them from Lake Okeechobee.
