Frances Battey Curtis

CURTIS, Frances Battey was born March 23, 1919, in Ft. Myers, the great-granddaughter of Florida pioneer Capt. Francis Asbury Hendry. The daughter of Robert Battey and Nettie Pearl Menge.   Frances attended Duke University and the Florida State College for Women, after which she taught in the Lee County School System. While a student in Tallahassee, Frances joined Alpha Delta Pi sorority, and was a member of the University of Florida General College Court.
  Frances married George D. Curtis Jr. in 1941, and moved to Tampa where, in World War II she worked for the U.S. Navy as an under engineering aide. She later joined St. Andrew's EpiscoChurch, participated in the St. Monica Church Circle, and the Daughters of the King.
  Frances was a member of the Junior League of Tampa, the Daughters of the American Revolution, Golfview Civic Association and Boca Grande Women's Club, and was a Life Member of the Nature Conservancy, the USF Botanical Gardens, FSU Alumni Association, FSU Emeritus Society and the DAR Heritage Society.
  Frances loved to travel. Her adventures included Africa, Alaska, Bermuda, the Caribbean, England, Scotland and Hong Kong. Frances was a master seamstress, creating unique fashions and winning awards and ribbons in competitions that included The Florida State Fair and the Strawberry Festival, She was a talented quilter and a spirited line dancer.
  Frances is survived by her husband, George D. Curtis, Jr.; children Carla Curtis Bradley,  G. David Curtis III and wife, Susan, Steinhatchee, Frances Anne Curtis, Nancy Rebecca Curtis; grandchildren, James Robert Bradley, Jr., and Casey Weaver ; great-grandchildren Amanda Bradley and James Robert Bradley III.
  Funeral Service will be held Saturday, Feb. 5, 2011, at Blount & Curry Funeral Home, 605 S. MacDill Avenue, at 11 am, with visitation one hour prior. Interment at Myrtle Hill Cemetery, with reception following at Tampa Yacht and Country Club.
