Noted Woman of Old South Passes Away Old residents of St Andrews, who recall Dr. Daniel B Cliffe, of Franklin, Tenn., for many years a regular visitor to St Andrews each year during tarpon fishing season, will learn with regret of the death of his mother, Mrs. Cornelia N Cliffe, which occurred at Dr. Cliffe's home in Franklin, on December 9. Mrs. Cliffe, the wife of a captain in the Union army during the Civil War, was conspicuous for her devotion to the "lost cause", and on one occasion, with only the aid of an old man, faced the fire of a Union battery to burn the Nashville bridge and halt for a time the Federal army advancing on Franklin. After the battle at Franklin, she was among the first on the field to minister to the wounded Confederates, and her home was converted into a hospital. After the war, Mrs. Cliffe made the first robes for the Ku Klux Klan in Williamson County, Tennessee, and when the organization was disbanded, the robes were sent to her to be destroyed. Mrs. Cliffe was daughter of John Nichols, a prominent North Carolinian. While her husband wore the Union blue, all of her brothers served the South under the Stars and Bars. |
