Baker County History.....

Baker County, Florida was founded in 1861 and named for Judge James
McNair Baker,a judge and Confederate Senator.
Most of the people who settled in Baker County before the Cival War
were hunters and farmers. After the war, the turpentine industry and
the logging industry brought people here to work. Baker County as it is
today was once part of five counties. But with its creation in 1861 it
became the 39th county created in Florida. The Court House was first
built in Sanderson but burnt sometime before 1886. The second court
house was built after a vote on February 22, 1886 to move it to
Darbyville, which is now Macclenny. The county farming began as a area
for cotten, and corn. But a lot of suger cane, sweet potatoes, and a
lot of leafy vegetables also grew here. Corn was often served in a
bottle rather than on a plate. (moonshine) Later on tobacco became the
main cash crop.

Fever struck in 1888 killing most of the residents of Macclenny.
